Police do not know how what caused the first car to crash

One person was killed and five others hurt in a four-car crash on the Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach Sunday afternoon, police said.

A driver was driving north on PCH near Ledroit Street about 1:30 p.m. when he crashed into another car in his lane, Laguna Beach Police Capt. Jason Kravetz said. The driver then veered into southbound lanes and hit more cars.

Police first reported five cars were involved in the crash but later changed the number to four.

The passenger in the first car died in the crash, police said. The driver was hospitalized with serious injuries but was expected to survive.

Four others were taken to the hospital with minor to severe injuries, Kravetz said.
