Crews Fight Huge Fire at Mortuary in Gardena

About 100 personnel responded to the fire, according to a Los Angeles County Fire official.

A dry Christmas tree may have been the cause of a huge fire inside a mortuary Thursday night in Gardena, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“Preliminary reports show there was a Christmas tree on fire outside of the building, which extended into the upper parts of the building, into the attic,” said Barry Nugent, division chief for the LA County Fire Department.

Nugent said, however, that the cause of the fire at McMillan & McCormick Mortuary remains under investigation.

Nearly 100 personnel responded to the blaze at the 2,000 square foot building at South Vermont Avenue and 164th Street around 7:30 p.m., a county fire official said.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire, City News Service reported. Mortuary spokesman John Kirk said there were no decedents or human ashes in the building at the time.
