Firefighters Rescue Man Trapped in LA River in South Gate

The water was rising around the man as firefighters worked to rescue him late Sunday evening.

A man was rescued late Sunday evening after he became trapped on a small piece of land in the Los Angeles River.

Firefighters battled a heavy downpour around 10:45 p.m. Sunday as they worked to rescue the man in South Gate.

He was stuck on a small piece of land in the LA River on the Long Beach (710) Freeway and Imperial Highway, fire officials said. 

The water was rising around him as crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were on scene. 

He was safely rescued by helicopter a short time later. 

It was not immediately clear how the man became stuck in the river or if he suffered any injuries.
