Former LA City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo's Family Escapes House Fire

The home was left seriously damaged after an early morning fire

Former Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo and his family escaped a house fire that left their million-dollar home charred early Saturday morning.

Delgadillo told NBC4 he woke to the sound of smoke alarms in his two-story home in the mid-Wilshire area. Neighbors said they were roused from sleep by the smell of the smoke, which billowed from the home's windows.

Delgadillo gathered his wife and children and they escaped the blaze, along with a friend of his sons and the family's two dogs, he said.

"My family is courageous, they're amazing … and the fire department is extraordinary, remarkable," said an emotional Delgadillo.

He joined firefighters in battling the blaze with a garden hose, a Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Alicia Welch said.

The home in the 800 block of South Windsor Boulevard (map), was left seriously damaged. The fire was reported at 2:52 a.m. and knocked down by 3:08 a.m., according to the LAFD.

Property records show the six-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot home last sold in 2002 for $930,000.

Returning to the home at midday Saturday, Delgadillo, pictured below, said the family was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and all were doing fine.

Video from the scene showed Delgadillo being treated with an oxygen mask.

"Make sure your batteries are fine in your smoke alarm, because that's what woke me up," Delgadillo said.

Delgadillo, 52, was city attorney from 2001 to 2009. Termed out, he ran in 2010 for the Democratic primary for state attorney general, but lost to San Francisco City/County Attorney Kamala Harris in the primary election.

Since then, he has been chief executive officer of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.
