Crews Work to Contain Fuel Spill in Huntington Harbor

A fire department HazMat team is working with the California Department of Fish and Game to contain the spill

"This is not the spill of the century," quipped a biologist from the Department of Fish and Game.

That's good news, considering what could've happened.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department received a report at about 11 p.m. Wednesday that a slick the size of a football field had appeared in Huntington Harbor behind Peter's Landing, according to a spokesman.

Personnel from several agencies began working to contain the fuel spill.  A fire department HazMat team was called in overnight to work with the California Department of Fish and Game to contain it.

Jeff Lopez, spokesman for the HBFD says it does not appear any wildlife was affected, and no injuries have been reported. The U.S. Coast Guard and Orange County Sheriff's Department were supplying boats and personnel to try to stretch containment booms around the slick, he said.

The California Department of Fish and Game has determined the spill is minor enough to simply allow it to dissipate.  An investigation they said is not warranted.  It does not appear to be coming from a docked boat, and it's possible it came from a boat that had already left the harbor, Lopez said.
