Grown-Up Outing: Brew at the Zoo

Caboodles of craft breweries will pour at this alfresco evening event.

Field trips were, are, and shall forever be aaaamazing, with all of the extra "a"-action the word can muster.

Kids love them, and for fine reason: You're going on an adventure, somewhere new, to see the inner workings of a dairy or a science museum or how caboodles of cute critters eat, play, and snooze.

Our chances as adults to participate in the whole field trip thing are greatly diminished, unfortunately, but some happenings geared to the 21-and-over set still hold, at their heart, some of that adventurous, get-out spirit.

Brew at the LA Zoo is one such event, a gathering created strictly for the grown-ups, as the "brew" in the name would suggest. Over 40 microbreweries and fancy, craft-concocting houses will participate in the 2016 outing, which sets up sudsy shop at the Los Angeles Zoo on Friday, Aug. 5.

The line-up includes Great Divide Brewing Company, Iron Triangle Brewing, Fireman's Brew Company, and dozens more.

But it isn't all about enjoying the evening air and an unusual IPA, though; live music and a variety of foodstuffs are part of the grown-up to-do, which is wearing its "6th annual" banner for 2016.

The Wayward Sons will unleash some "80s arena rock" while Zydeco Trail Ryderz go the dance-it-up, accordion-awesome route.

More acts are on the schedule, but make time for the zookeeper talks and "up-close animal encounters." Will you coo over something small and scaly or whiskery and squeaky? The chances are pretty darn strong, so start practicing those "awws" and whatever endearments you'll want to utter when facing a furry zoo resident.

Thus it is 100% true, then: That feeling of getting outside, and doing something educational, still exists, even if you're decades past being a tot.

Finding that exploration-minded fun, with some grown-up activities in tow, can be a bit of a challenge, but the zoo's got it going on, as it has for the past half-decade (plus a year).
