Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

Remembering the longtime La Jolla resident.

Dear Springfield, Massachusetts: We are in no way encroaching. Please know that.

You are indeed the celebrated birthplace of Theodore Geisel, who went onto become Dr. Seuss. He was born on March 2nd, 1904, so we're naturally remembering the great children's author today, but then we remember him frequently, seeing as how he also called California his home.

And that he created the Lorax, and the Sneetches, and Thing 1 and Thing 2. Don't even start us on the fish in "The Cat in the Hat"; we get that fish. That fish has had up to here, with everything, and there are days we feel like that.

La Jolla, beyond being one of the most supernaturally beautiful places in the world, as well as home to this bit of historic gorgeousness, and hordes of harbor seals, too, was the longtime address of Dr. Seuss.

In fact, when we're in La Jolla, we see Dr. Seuss, in the brightly hued tower and dome of La Valencia hotel, in those comically whiskered seals. We also see him here, at the Geisel Library at UCSD La Jolla, which houses the Dr. Seuss collection.

Like we were saying, Springfield, you're very lucky, but we're lucky, too. We can all share. There's enough Seussian sparkle to go around.
