High Fire Danger Expected, Red Flag Warning Issued Amid Santa Ana Winds

The red flag alert applies Sunday night through Wednesday afternoon, though critical fire weather conditions may remain

Weather experts have issued a red flag warning across much of Southern California until mid-week, because of strong winds and high fire danger.

Weak to moderate Santa Ana winds will bring high fire risk to Los Angeles, the mountains of Ventura County and the Santa Clarita Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The red alert applies starting Sunday night and lasts through Wednesday afternoon, though critical fire weather conditions may remain because of extremely dry fuels and low humidity.

Southern Californians can expect high northeast wind gusts, low humidity and high temperatures of up to 90 degrees, heavily drying out the area. If something ignites, rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior would be likely.

On Sunday, six kayakers in Malibu were blown a mile out to sea after Santa Ana winds of 50 mph picked up suddenly. They were rescued by squid fishing boat crews. The sea had been calm when they pushed off earlier in the morning.
