21 People Arrested, Including Council Members, at Hotel Worker Rally in Anaheim

"We're asking to be respected as workers," Maria Hernandez of Unite Here Local 11 said.

Anaheim City Councilman Jose Moreno and Orange County Democratic Party Chair Ada Briceno were among 21 people ticketed for sitting and blocking traffic during a protest in Anaheim, police said Friday.

Members and supporters of Unite Here Local 11 advocated for "fair and dignified" wages and pensions for workers at Sheraton Park and Hilton hotels during a protest at Harbor Boulevard and Katella Avenue, according to Briceno.

Briceno, Moreno and 19 others were handcuffed, cited and released about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Anaheim police Sgt. Jeff Mundy said.

"We're asking to be respected as workers," Maria Hernandez of Unite Here Local 11 said. "We have to do these types of things to be taken seriously and if we have to go on strike, we will."

Workers at both hotels voted late last year to go on strike. Both hotels involved could not be reached for comment.
