An Inglewood police officer was shot in the leg Sunday night by a possible carjacking suspect, police said Monday.
The officer and a partner pulled over the driver of a silver 2008 Chevrolet Impala for a traffic stop on 113th Street near Crenshaw Blvd. about 10:25 p.m. Sunday night, Inglewood police Lt. James Madia said.
As they prepared to get out of their patrol car, the officers learned that the Impala had been stolen at gunpoint the night before from a woman in Long Beach.
Someone in the car shot at the officer, who was hit in the leg.
“As they were getting out of the police vehicle, a suspect or suspects from the vehicle they were attempting to stop started to shoot,” Madia said. “The officers retreated to the back of their patrol car and took cover.”
It was not clear, Madia said, whether the shooter was the driver or another person in the car.
The driver of the Impala then sped away, abandoning the car later at Prairie Ave. and 112th Street.

Investigators examined the car for evidence, but have not yet determined who had been driving it.
Inglewood police did not release the name of the officer who was shot in the leg.
