Julio Urias Gets First Career Win in Dodgers 6-5 Victory over Brewers

Adrian Gonzalez got back on track and Julio Urias earned his first big league victory as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

After sitting out the last two games for LA, Gonzalez broke out of a slump going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

"That was really good to see," Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts said of his first baseman. "Today he looked a lot more relaxed, his head was clear and he took some good swings tonight."

The Dodgers staked a two-run lead in the second inning thanks to back-to-back singles by Gonzalez and Trayce Thompson to start the top half of the inning.

Thompson attempted to steal second and Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy's errant throw allowed Gonzalez to score and Thompson to advance to third. A few pitches later, Yasmani Grandal grounded into a fielder's choice to plate the second run.

Milwaukee tied the game in the bottom of the third when Ryan Braun hit a two-run, two-out double off Urias who walked two batters in the inning. Overall, Urias issued a free pass to six Brewers batters.

"I struggled with some pitches. Obviously the walks are too many for any starter," Urias told the media through a translator. "I struggled with the fastball outside and was later to adjust later in the game. I was happy to get the win."

The 19-year-old set career highs in innings pitched (six), walks (six) and pitches (100) en route to his first victory. Urias became just the second teenager to win a Major League game since Felix Hernandez in 2005.

"He got a couple firsts today: first hit, first win, overall it was a good day for him," Gonzalez said of his countrymen.

The Mexican phenom helped his own cause at the plate with his first career hit and RBI when he singled up the middle to cap-off a three-run fourth inning.

"It was incredible today," Urias said smiling. "It's beautiful and incredible. One of the best days of my life. What more can I say?"

The Dodgers nearly denied the "Teenager" his first victory when disaster struck in the bottom of the eighth.

With Pedro Baez on in relief, the Brewers scored two runs on an RBI double by Jonathan Lucroy. Power-hitter, Chris Carter represented the tying run at the plate so Roberts went to the bullpen for Joe Blanton.

Carter crushed a first-pitch curveball into deep centerfield that Joc Pederson caught as he simultaneously crashed into he wall. With Pederson writhing on the track, Lucroy was able to tag from second and score, cutting the LA lead to just one run. Play stopped as Pederson slowly walked off the field clutching his right shoulder.

"You hope for the best and hope it's not something real bad," Gonzalez said of Pederson's injury. "Hopefully everything comes out negative. He made an incredible play."

Thankfully, an update by Roberts after the game announced that x-rays on Pederson's shoulder came out negative.

"We took some X-Rays and I think we dodged a bullet," Roberts told reporters in his office after the game. "There's no fracture, but a bruise in the AC joint. We're going to see how he is tomorrow, but to know the x-rays come up negative is great."

Four batters later, with the tying run on second base, Blanton threw a wild pitch that kicked all the way to the backstop. Grandal threw to the plate and Blaton was able to make the tag, ending the inning and securing Urias' first victory.

"We call that play number seven," joked Gonzalez. "I thought it was a well run play and it went as we practice it."

"For Joe [Blanton] to be there to put that tag down," added Roberts. "I thought that was the play of the game."

Chase Anderson was beat up by the boys in blue for the second time in as many weeks as he allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in four innings. 10 days ago, he was tagged for seven runs by the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

"We know he likes to throw his changeup," Gonzalez said of the approach against Anderson. "So we tried to have quality at-bats and look for the ball up in the zone."

Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save of the season.

Players of the Game:

Adrian Gonzalez: 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Julio Urias: 2 runs on 2 hits with 6 SO in 6 IP. RBI single.
Jonathan Lucroy: 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Three Takeaways:

1. Joc the Rock: Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson made the spectacular defensive play of the game when he robbed Chris Carter of extra bases and most likely secured the win for Urias and the Dodgers.

2. What Slump? Both Adrian Gonzalez and Trayce Thompson broke out of slumps on Tuesday. Gonzalez was out of the starting lineup for the last two games before going 3-for-3 and Thompson was 0-for-19 before a second inning single.

3. El Charro: Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez wore a custom-designed traditional Mexican Charro suit after the team's 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
