2nd Gun Sought in Lake View Terrace Shooting

Suspect in custody; parole officer in stable condition

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies on Thursday continued the search for a second handgun allegedly used in gunfight between a parolee and state parole officers in Lake View Terrace.

Steven Hoff, 43, is accused of shooting a 40-year-old state parole officer in the face during a confrontation on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting led to a nearly five-hour manhunt. The two-strike parolee was eventually found hiding under debris in an abandoned swimming pool.

"He had barricaded himself underneath there. The dog found him and subsequently bit him," said Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Homicide Bureau.

The injured officer, a 10-year veteran of the department, was recovering Thursday after undergoing emergency surgery overnight. He was listed in stable condition and his identity has not been released.

Also Thursday, the sheriff's department confirmed that "an unidentified woman is being detained and questioned in connection with the investigation."

The incident began about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday as two state parole officers approached the suspect inside a large detached trailer in the 10600 block of Foothill Boulevard for an alleged parole violation, according to authorities.

"Upon entry to the trailer, a parole officer was met with the suspect's gunfire and struck in the face,'' said Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. "Another parole officer returned fire at the suspect. The suspect then fled on foot, and a containment was established."
