Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Crime Lab Now the ‘Gold Standard,' Largest in U.S.

Authorities say they hope the new technology will aid them in solving more crimes with forensic testing.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's crime lab – after earning two more accreditations – was named the largest full-service, fully accredited crime laboratory in the United States on Tuesday.

The CSI lab has incorporated state-of-the-art technology, which the department said will help solve more cases.

New tech includes a 3-D high density scanner, latent fingerprint processing, electrostatic detection technique, and more.

Electrostatic detection technique uses equipment to scan ransom notes or extortion letters to reveal indentations that might otherwise go unnoticed.

A 3-D high density scanner will give investigators an in-depth and bird’s eye view of crime scenes.

Police demonstrated myriad tools at a news conference Tuesday.

The department demonstrated latent fingerprint processing, which uses a super glue to pull prints.

Officials also showed how the lab will use chemicals to enhance bloody shoe and tire impressions.

"This accreditation affirms our long standing commitment to providing the highest quality investigative services for 200 law enforcement agencies and ensuring that the Los Angeles County criminal justice system is best served," Sheriff Jim McDonnell said in a news release.
