Long Beach Beaches Reopen After Spills

Beaches were closed until bacteria levels decreased

Three beaches in Long Beach that had been closed due to a sewage spill were reopened today.

Mother's Beach, Marine Stadium and Colorado Lagoon were all closed after a roughly 1,000-gallon sewage spill that occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the Bixby Terrace area, just east of Cal State Long Beach. The sewage flowed into the Los Cerritos Channel, which leads directly to the affected beach areas.

Cleanup crews quickly contained the spill, but the beaches were closed until bacteria levels decreased.

Tests of the water at the beach areas on Tuesday and today showed that bacteria levels had dropped to within state health standards, according to the city.
