A police officer was injured in a fight with a parolee in Long Beach, who accidentally shot himself in the leg during the confrontation and was later arrested, authorities said Tuesday.

The trouble started about 9:45 p.m. Monday in the 5900 block of Atlantic Avenue. Officers had gone to the address on Atlantic Avenue to take the parolee into custody, Long Beach police Lt. Jeff Liberman said. A fight ensued, during which a Long Beach officer suffered multiple injuries and the parolee accidentally shot himself, then escaped, Liberman said.

After midnight, officers found a shell casing and a trail of blood, and a neighbor told police that he had driven the parolee to the area of Hullett Street and Locust Avenue.

Police went to the second location and found blood outside a residence and eventually took the parolee into custody in the yard. Officers used non-lethal stun guns and police dogs to subdue the man, , Liberman said

The parolee was hospitalized with a gunshot to the leg, as well as dog bites and scratches on his arms, Liberman said.

The officer was taken to a hospital and released after treatment, said Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.
