Long Beach Police Officer ‘Unintentionally' Shoots Driver During Traffic Stop

A Long Beach police officer accidentally fired his weapon and wounded a man during a traffic stop at the One Love Cali Reggae Festival in Long Beach, police reported Sunday.

At about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a Long Beach Police Department officer made a traffic stop in the 900 block of Harbor Plaza, off the 710 Freeway.

A loaded firearm and open alcoholic containers was found and recovered from the vehicle, police said.

Additional officers were requested and arrived on the scene when one of the officers unintentionally discharged his weapon and shot the driver of the vehicle in the arm, police said. The driver was treated and later released from a hospital.

There were four passengers in the vehicle; none were injured.

The officer has not been identified and the shooting is being investigated by the department's homicide division. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
