Los Alamitos Students Caught “Sexting”

Students at an Orange County middle school were suspended after nude photos of a 14-year-old girl were sent via cell phone to other students, school officials said.

A group of students using photo messaging circulated the photos. The McAuliffe Middle School student sent the photos of herself to a friend, who sent the images to other cell phone users.

Los Alamitos Unified School district superintendent Gregory Franklin said the photos were taken off campus, according to The Associated Press.

Franklin would only say there were about 10 students involved in the "sexting" -- the practice of taking a risque picture of oneself and forwarding it to others via cell phone. They received in-house suspensions, meaning they showed up for school but did not go to classes, the Orange County Register reported.

No charges are expected.

Last fall, the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy surveyed teens and young adults about sexting or posting such materials online. The results revealed that 39 percent of teens are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages, and 48 percent reported receiving such messages.
