Missing Man Located Hours After Angeles Crest Highway Crash

A man and a woman were rescued after their car went over the side of the road early Sunday.

A man who was missing for hours after his car went over the side of the road on Angeles Crest Highway was rescued late Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The man, identified as 20-year-old Daniel Barragan, was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital and listed in stable condition, according to the La Crescenta Sheriff's Department.

Barragan's passenger, believed to be a teenage girl, was rescued around 10 a.m. after sheriff's deputies spotted the car on the side of the cliff and heard her screaming for help, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The search for the Barragan was called off at 2 p.m. after rescue teams and dogs searched for three hours and were unable to find anyone, but was resumed around 3 p.m. after a media crew on the scene reported hearing someone screaming in the woods, deputies said.

It was not immediately clear why crews were unable to locate the driver during the extensive initial search, LA County fire captain Brian Jordan said.

Angeles Crest Highway was closed during search and rescue efforts for both the driver and passenger, the fire department said.

The car went off the highway near mile marker 38.28, though when the crash occurred was not immediately clear, officials said.
