Family members on Friday remembered a 19-year-old man who was shot to death in the middle of a busy Redondo Beach intersection as a "funny kid" who was outgoing and helpful.
Mike Cortes, known to his family as Sebastian, his middle name, was shot during an argument on Thursday in a crosswalk at Inglewood and Marine avenues. Cortes' 16-year-old friend was shot in the stomach and was in critical condition. He's expected to survive.
Cortes' family said the two were involved in a scuffle with another person, then someone on a skateboard came up and shot both teenagers. Police arrested a 19-year-old man in the case.
Family members created a makeshift memorial near the spot where Cortes was shot.
Cortes had run ins with police, including an arrest for tagging, but he didn't deserve to die, his aunt said.
