Police: Officers Shoot, Kill Man Who Wounded Woman

A man allegedly shot and critically wounded a woman today and was then killed by Fountain Valley police, authorities said.

Police got a 911 call about a domestic dispute in a parking lot of a business in the 18400 block of Pacific Street at 12:07 p.m., said Sgt. Eric Orahood of the Fountain Valley Police Department.

The tipster suddenly stopped speaking, and then said, "I think a gun is involved," he said, adding that the dispatcher heard gunshots in the background.

Two officers who were in the area showed up less than two minutes later, and the suspect pointed a handgun at them, Orahood said.

The officers, fearing for their own safety, fired at the suspect -- how many times was unclear -- and he died at UCI Medical Center.

The female victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was undergoing surgery for several gunshot wounds, Orahood said. She was listed in critical condition, but was expected to survive, he said.

A third person was also grazed by a bullet, the sergeant said.

Orahood said witnesses told investigators the woman was the man's ex-girlfriend and they had a child together.

The names of the man and woman were not immediately available.
