A man was wounded in a shooting in South Los Angeles, less than a block from where a Los Angeles City Council candidates forum concluded about an hour earlier, authorities said on Saturday.
The shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. Friday at 50th Street and Avalon Boulevard, said Sgt. L. Martinez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Newton Station.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital in stable condition, he said.
The gunfire erupted less than a block from the Avalon-Carver Community Center, where five of the seven City Council candidates vying to replace Ninth District Councilwoman Jan Perry -- who is now a mayoral candidate -- had finished a forum around 8 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Times.
Shootings are not uncommon in the area, Martinez said.
Around 11:15 p.m. Friday, just a few blocks away on 53rd Street east of Central Avenue, several vehicles were hit by gunfire, but no one was injured, he said.
Officers found 15 bullet casing at the scene, he said. Friday's shooting outside the community center occurred just as campaign volunteers were walking to their cars, according to The Times.

“We ran, and a staff member (for candidate) Mike Davis ran toward the group because we started hearing screaming,'' Lewis Myers, a field strategist for candidate Ana Cubas, told the newspaper.
Davis' campaign manager Robert Cole told The Times he heard seven shots, called 911 and found the victim in his front yard suffering from a left shoulder wound. The victim said someone fired upon him from a car, Cole told The Times.
