The Mayor Is Racking Up the Frequent Flyer Miles

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be in Oklahoma City to attend the annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, his third trip outside Southern California in a month.

Villaraigosa, the group's vice president, will participate in discussions about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico; immigration reform; public transportation expansion; gang violence reduction; DNA investigation backlogs and other issues.

On Sunday, Villaraigosa is scheduled to attend a memorial service marking the April 19, 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

Later that day, he will participate in a panel discussion on immigration with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Trenton, N.J. Mayor Doug Palmer.

On Monday, Villaraigosa will meet with other mayors to discuss the impact of high-speed rail on cities and metropolitan areas.

At the end of their annual meeting, mayors will vote on policy resolutions to forward to Congress and the Obama administration in hopes of shaping federal legislation.

Villaraigosa has traveled extensively since being sworn in for a second term July 1. He visited Washington twice last month, first to lobby Congress for transportation funds, then for Mexican President Felipe Calderon's first official visit to the nation's capital.
