1 Dead, 3 Hospitalized After SUV Driver Strikes Pedestrians in Monterey Park

An SUV veered into three pedestrians near a bus stop Friday, killing one and critically injuring two others.

The driver, a woman in her 70s, swerved to avoid two other cars that had stopped to wait for pedestrians and hopped onto the sidewalk, hitting the pedestrians, said Monterey Park police Sgt. Bob Hung.

Two of them were thrown and hit a bus bench while a woman was thrown onto the roadway.

The woman died.

Two men were taken to a hospital in critical condition. None of the victims were identified.

A motorist said the same driver crashed into her car while she was stopped at the light at Avondale Avenue, feet from where the pedestrians were hit.

She said she had just dropped her son off at school.

The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital.

"We believe the injuries were caused by the traffic collision," Hung said. "Why she became distracted is still unclear."
