List: 100 Milestone Films Cinematographers Think You Should Watch

Pop the popcorn, and settle in. There are some classics you should watch.

The American Society of Cinematographers marked its 100th anniversary Tuesday by releasing a list of 100 milestone films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century, as chosen by its members.

  1. "Lawrence of Arabia"
  2. "Blade Runner"
  3. "Apocalypse Now''
  4. "Citizen Kane"
  5. "The Godfather''
  6. "Raging Bull"
  7. "The Conformist"
  8. "Days of Heaven"
  9. "2001: A Space Odyssey"
  10. "The French Connection"

The list -- the other 90 titles are unranked -- is the first of its kind to showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers, according to the ASC, which was founded by 15 cinematographers in 1919.

"ASC members wanted to call attention to the most significant achievements of the cinematographer's art but not refer to one achievement as 'better' than another,'' said Steven Fierberg ("The Affair," "Good Girls Revolt,'' "Entourage''), who organized the list after members voted. "The selected films represent a range of styles, eras and visual artistry, but most importantly, it commemorates films that are inspirational or influential to ASC members and have exhibited enduring influence on generations of filmmakers.''

The full list of 100 films can be found on the "American Cinematographer'' Facebook account, and at www.theasc.com.
