There was a time when the final days of October were very much built around the Obsessive Pursuit of the Perfect Costume (tm).
Shops were haunted, and closets combed through, and then, voíla! A reveler was ready to hit the town in full, frightful, October-31-esque regalia.
Nowadays, though, as much consideration is given to the art of mustache style come the end of October as that all-important Halloween get-up. For Movember, that annual month-long fundraiser devoted to help a host of men's health initiatives, kicks off the moment after Halloween has chuckled its last dastardly chuckle for the year.
Movember=November, yes, save that first letter, and if you're guessing the "M" stands for mustaches, well, you read the previous paragraph.
Here's the headline on this help-out, give-back happening: Men will go fully clean shaven on or hours before the first day of November, and then, over the course of the month, a marvelous mustache shall sprout upon their upper lips, facial hair that will surely impress with those passersby fortunate enough to behold it.
Friends and family will donate to the mustache-grower and, ultimately, the Movember cause, and, yes, women can participate, too. If you want to be a "Mo Sister" for the month, you absolutely can and should be, and you don't even need to wear a faux 'stache to the various festivities (though that, of course, is done with aplomb by many ladies).
Ah yes, the festivities: A number of local barbershops, and other assorted locations, will jump into the shaving celebration from the outset, and there are parties to show off your stachery at the end of November.

In fact, there's a big bash well ahead of November, on Oct. 27, at the Movember Foundation U.S. Headquarters in Culver City. Other happenings include a "Morning of the Mo" event on Oct. 31 in San Clemente, a Rudy's Barbershop Shave-Off in Santa Monica on Oct. 31, and the LA Auto Show Stache Dash on Nov. 21.
Best find your furry-of-face festivity, the one near you or the one that rocks your boat, and plan accordingly. And even before that, you'll want to check out the fundraising page, and the ways to get involved with the most hirsuite (and equally sweet-of-heart) month of the year.
The goal is clear: Movember Foundation, and the thousands of participants in the month-long to-do, want to "raise funds and vital awareness for men's health," "in order to help men live longer, healthier and happier lives."
