No Bond for Cruise Crew Member Accused of Assault

LOS ANGELES -- A Princess Cruises crew member accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger during a 14-day cruise has been ordered detained without bond in Los Angeles.

Jorge Teixeira, a Portuguese national, was deemed a flight risk by a federal judge on Thursday. The 38-year-old man has been charged with aggravated sexual abuse and is scheduled to be arraigned March 30. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

Teixeira was arrested Monday as the Coral Princess ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles after a cruise through the Panama Canal.

The passenger told authorities she was sexually assaulted by Teixeira after they shared wine in the ship's dining room.

Deputy federal public defender Stephen Demik declined to comment about the case.
