Not Dead Yet –Red Light Cameras on Life Support

LA City Council sends issue to committee

The controversial red light cameras at 32 Los Angeles intersections may have a new lease on life.

The Los Angeles City Council, which on Tuesday failed to override the decision by the Police Commission to kill the program, voted Wednesday to send the issue to its Budget and Finance Committee.

That panel, which will look into the cost of the cameras, is headed by Councilman Bernard Parks who is in favor of renewing the camera contract on a month-to-month basis.

The contract with American Traffic Solution will expire on July 31.

If the Budget Committee fails to send the issue back to the full council in time for the July 29th meeting, the program will officially end.

Opponents of the traffic light cameras claim the city has not realized the revenue it expected from red light generated traffic tickets.
Supporters of the program claim it saves lives and reduces injuries.
