One Year Later: Singing Survivor of Haiti Earthquake

One year after she was rescued by LA County firefighters, Ginette Sainfort has "no time for sadness"

One year ago, an LA County Search and Rescue team pulled Ginette Sainfort from the rubble after Haiti's magnitude-7.0 earthquake.

Despite being trapped for six days, Sainfort was singing as crews pulled her to safety. The words of her song: "Don't be afraid of death."

Ginette is back at her bank job in Port-au-Prince, and she still keeps that song of hope in her heart.

"I feel happy to be alive," she said. "I have no time for sadness."

On Jan. 12, 2010, she was trapped under about 30 feet of rubble for six days after the bank in which she was working collapsed. Her husband, Roger, and other Haitians tried to reach her, but they didn't have the proper equipment.

Then an LA County Search and Rescue team arrived. Three hours later, she was singing as the team pulled her to safety.

"I look at her and I smile," Roger said. "Every time."

In a satellite interview with her rescuers a few months later, Ginette said, "I love you. God bless you." She then blew them a kiss.

"It's probably the most moving moment for any rescue that a rescuer will ever have," said lead rescuer Terry DeJournett.

The team from LA County was responsible for several rescues in the quake's aftermath. During one rescue, a crowd began chanting, "USA! USA!"
