Orange County Upscale Burglar Caught in Las Vegas

A man suspected of burglarizing upscale homes in Newport Beach was arrested Wednesday after a police chase in Las Vegas, a day after police issued a bulletin identifying him as a suspect.

Richard William Abbott, 45, is in custody in the Clark County jail in Las Vegas pending extradition, Newport Beach police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.

Abbott, whose last known address was Palm Springs, was identified as the man who burglarized a Newport Beach home on Oct. 25 and is suspected of two other burglaries in the same neighborhood in December, Sailor said.

Las Vegas police spotted Abbott about 8 p.m. Wednesday while he drove a red 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible,  Sailor said.

A chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph until the vehicle's engine blew and Abbott peacefully surrendered, Sailor said.

Abbott is suspected of carrying out other burglaries in the Palm Springs area, Sailor said.

Abbott typically got inside fancy homes by way of a skylight or breaking a window.   Sailor said Abbott  was a capable burglar who could crack safes.   Abbott primarily stole jewelry, cash and guns, Sailor said.
