Bicyclist Injured in PCH Crash

The crash occurred near Coastline Drive east of Malibu early Wednesday morning

A bicyclist was injured Wednesday morning in a crash with a truck on Pacific Coast Highway that closed the road in both directions east of Malibu.

Details regarding the bicyclist's condition were not immediately available.

The crash was reported at about 5 a.m. Traffic was backing up at Coastline Drive early Wednesday, but the road reopened at about 7 a.m.

The stretch of road has long been the subject of safety concerns among cyclists who shared the roadway with vehicles. The city of Malibu is working on a Pacific Coast Highway Safety study to assess road conditions, accident patterns, traffic and possible safety improvements.

Last month, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill requiring drivers to provide cyclists with 3 feet of clearance when passing from behind. The new law -- currently, drivers are required to pass at "a safe distance" -- goes into effect in September 2014.

Violations can result in fines up to $100 for a first conviction.
