A pilot and passenger died after a small home-built plane crashed into an agricultural field near Oxnard Airport on Saturday afternoon, according to a federal aviation official.
Oxnard police were on the scene of the crash, which occurred at 12:15 p.m. in a field near the airport.
The homebuilt RV3 crashed "under unknown circumstances," Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.
It was "destroyed and burned upon impact," Gregor said.
Ealier, Gregor said local authorities were reporting the pilot was the only victim. But later said another person was onboard the plane when it crashed.
The plane crashed near Wooley Road and Victoria Avenue (map), about a mile south of Oxnard Airport.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, Gregor said.
