If you like to get out in the out-of-doors and also do some good, you might help out Tree People, an organization that is helping to plant trees in the areas burned out by the Station Fire and other wildfires.
The non-profit group is seeking to replant about 250 square miles of the Angeles National Forest this spring and summer. To do so, it needs lots of help.
Volunteers from TreePeople are working with the U.S. Forest Service. They began replanting seedlings and saplings on the charred soils at Chilao Campground six days ago. Right now, they are concentrating on planting native pine seedlings in the area of the forest that lost the most trees in the Station Fire.
The Station Fire burned about a third of the Angeles National Forest. The bulk of the reforestation effort will take place next year from February to mid-April.
TreePeople has a goal of planting 22,000 seedlings per year in the Angeles National Forest in 2011 and 2012. This is roughly 300 trees per acre.
The organization is signing up volunteers right now. For more information, go to www.treepeople.org/angeles-national-forest-restoration Or call 818-753-4600.
