The amount of service requests for potholes across the city in February of this year is 75 percent more than the same month last year as the city adds staff and works overtime to make fixes.
The increase in pothole service requests through MyLA311 almost doubled from January to February, going from 4,408 to 7,931.
The Los Angeles City Council Friday approved a pothole blitz, $250,000 from Measure M for immediate repairs. The fixes will happen over four consecutive weekends starting March 9.
The city's Department of Public Works also says they will inspect streets to identify unreported potholes. There has been an increase in LA roads that are deemed in good repair, compared to those that had that label in 2012, according to the city's rating system. That is 55 percent of all streets, according to the latest State of the Streets report.
Today, 25 percent of LA roads are still considered in poor condition. The city is working on a new surface treatment application that is designed to " ... prevent further pavement degradation while improving wearing surface conditions ...," according to the report. It is also designed to prevent water from seeping into the base materials in the roadway that causes damage and is expected to reduce the number of repairs needed and costs to taxpayers.
That mix is still not being used but the I-Team has learned by the end of the year some 25 miles of road of hundreds across LA will be repaired using it, weather permitting.
As for those potholes last month, 80 percent of the requests have been completed. But more rain is on the way. Staff is being moved from other functions to deal with the pothole repair capacity and will use overtime to make repairs on weekends.
