After a Sweltering 15 Hours, Power Restored in Most of Hollywood Hills

The disruption was in the area of Yucca Street and the Hollywood Freeway.

Electricity was restored to thousands of customers in the Hollywood Hills Thursday night, some 15 hours after power in the area went out during the first day of a Southern California heat wave.

The outage began about 7 a.m. The exact location of the Thursday morning disruption was in the area of Yucca Street and the Hollywood Freeway (map), Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said.

According to LA DWP's online outage tracker, 2,184 customers were affected by the outage. Some 300 customers remained without power Thursday night.

Officials do not believe the outage was heat-related.

The outage caused trouble for residents and businesses in the area. Tenants of one gated apartment complex were unable to drive their cars off the property because the electrical gates weren’t working, and one coffee shop was forced to take cash only and offer a limited menu.

“By this time of day we normally would have several hundred dollars in sales and we've only done $50 or $60,” barista Mandy Di Rito said.

Though the DWP said it did not believe the outage was heat related, it advised customers not to run air conditioning units around the clock, especially as a summer heat wave approached the region.
