An elderly man is in critical condition following an attack with a hammer that left him collapsed on his driveway.
Officers received a call regarding a fight in progress on the 100 block of Wakeford Street. When they arrived, they found a 70-year-old man suffering from "several" deep cuts to his head, according to Santa Paula Police Department officer Allen Macias.
Authorities do not yet know what motivated the 44-year-old attacker, identified as a homeless man by police, to strike the man.
The suspect was identified as Luis Montalvo of Oxnard.
After a witness pointed out Montalvo, police arrested him and they found the hammer in the front yard of a nearby home.
Montalvo, who police say does not know the victim, is being held on $510,000 bail on attempted murder charges.
