Schools to Be “More Like Prisons, Less Like Schools”

That's what Stanford University professor of education David Plank thinks will happen to California schools as a result of another wave of budget cuts forced by this year's $6 billion deficit and a projected $19 billion shortfall next year.

Plank's quoted in a Mercury News story that offers a list of ways that schools could be hurt by the expected new wave of cuts under Gov. Jerry Brown. The list includes districts going under and cuts so severe they are likely to trigger waves of civil disobedience, by students and teachers alike

  • A school year, already trimmed by five days in some districts, shortened by another week.
  • Layoffs of counselors, librarians, athletic directors, coaches -- and an end to after-school athletics.
  • Dozens of districts declaring insolvency.
