Search Resumes for Missing Diver Off Catalina

A commercial dive boat captain reported a scuba diver emerged from the water and cried for help before slipping under the water again Monday afternoon.

Search and rescue crews resumed scouring the waters off Catalina Island Wednesday morning, looking for a scuba diver reported missing.

A commercial dive boat captain told the U.S. Coast Guard that a diver from his boat surfaced from the water at Emerald Bay Monday afternoon, cried for help and then went underwater.

Search teams from multiple local agencies have been looking for the diver by air, boat and in dive teams.

The identity of the scuba diver has not been released.

Officials said Tuesday afternoon the effort is now considered a recovery mission, as they no longer believe the diver can be rescued.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dive crews will continue to search throughout the day.
