Shave the Date: Movember's LA Kick-Off

Find a place to polish up the chin 'n cheek (and raise funds for men's health).

While many a Halloweenie spends the final week in October planning out their costume, down the last flick of lipstick or the perfect set of socks, there are other ready-to-revelers thinking solely about the space between their upper lip and the bottom of their nose.

We speak of the Movember crowd, those men who spend the month of November growing mustaches to raise funds and back awareness about men's health issues and initiatives. And while the Mo Sistas may not be planning their 'stache-growth, they're also out there stirring up money and interest.

But before November kicks off, and all of the whimsical facial hair growing can commence, there is the shaving and the pre-celebrating during the Shave the Date kick-off. The Movember Foundation doesn't just expect you to stand before your own bathroom mirror while taking razor to cheek on the first day of the eleventh month. There are parties and shave-focused fetes that get the whole follicle fundraiser going.

And they all fall in the days just ahead of Halloween, so let's hope your Oct. 31 costume requires you to be smooth of lip. The Barbershop at the Original Farmers Market at Third & Fairfax is hosting an all-day shave on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 9 o'clock at night. A Movember rep'll be about, to talk about the campaign, and there's a razor giveaway, too.

But the barbershop beneath the Farmers Market clocktower isn't the only one making men cleanshaven ahead of Nov. 1. Baxter Finley Barber & Shop, The Shave of Beverly Hills, and The New California Barbershop will also be hosting hullabaloos on Oct. 30, all with the express purpose of getting visages free of the fuzz and getting the word out that Movember is nearly here.

Of course, if you want to stand before your bathroom mirror and razor yourself, cool. But consider the helpful possibilities of getting it down at a barbershop, where others can advise you on what kind of mustache to grow all November long. Old West cowpoke? Regal French aristocrat? The styles are spectacular and plentiful.

How to choose, how to choose? Whatever you go with, start with a polished mug, and start here, good-hearted, soon-to-be-smooth-of-face fundraisers.
