A suspect who authorities said gouged at the eyes of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputy in Cudahy was shot and hospitalized Thursday morning.

Deputies from the East Los Angeles station responded about 9 p.m. Wednesday to a family disturbance call in the 5100 block of Live Oak Street, east of Wilcox Avenue, and talked with the suspect, who had reportedly been assaulting a family member, according to Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"During the deputies contact the suspect attacked one of the deputies gouging at his eyes while attempting to disarm him," Ortiz said, adding another deputy shot the suspect, who was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not disclosed.

It was unclear if the deputy who was attacked sustained any injuries.

The shooting was being investigated by the Sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau as well as sheriff's station or Detective Division investigators.

The sheriff's department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General, who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
