Not every tail-wagger hit the waves; some came dressed as ocean animals, like this sweet Land-Octo.

Another pair of pups showed as Surf 'n Turf. The costume contest wasn't the only scene on the sand; over 50 dog-focused vendors were nearby, talking food, toys, and more with visitors.

Style and finesse? This pup showed both. The competitors competed in a quartet of weight classes, from Small (20 pounds or under) all the way to Extra Large (61 pounds or more). Every class had at least two heats, with a "Best in Surf" heat, with the winner of each weight class, to round it all out.

A Pug plus the Pacific? A very adorable scene. Plaques and awards went to the winner, and the Surf Dog Hall of Fame held an induction ceremony, too (which included, for the first time, two humans: Peter Noll and Doug Hokstad representing SoCal Surf Dogs).

The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon raised thousands for animals in need on Sept. 10. Need more surfing pups in your life? While it isn't affiliated with the Del Mar event, Surf City Surf Dog is just ahead on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Huntington Beach. A number of rescues and organizations, including Barks of Love, are among the 2017 beneficiaries.
