Surfer Showdown at John Wayne Airport

John Wayne Airport isn't big enough for two surf-themed restaurants

Two restaurants named after legendary surfing icons are among the contenders for space at an airport named after a legendary actor.

An expansion at Orange County's John Wayne Airport includes new food options for travelers. Among the proposals --  the Hobie Hut and Corky Carroll's Surf Bar.

The OC Register reports:

"...one of the most interesting battles pits two Orange County surfing icons against each other — surfing champion Corky Carroll vs. industry legend Hobie Alter. In separate proposals, two companies bidding for the airport food service contract are proposing restaurants named after the surfing celebrities."

HMS Host International is pushing for the Hobie Hut. Delaware North Companies wants to add Corky Carroll's Surf Bar.

The expansion is expected to offer more OC-themed food brands. The project is expected to be completed next year.

The John Wayne Airport Commission will deliver its main food service provider recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. A board vote has note been scheduled.
