Suspect Sought in Deadly Assault on 53-Year-Old Cab Driver

Eddy Nwanyanwu was hit so hard, he died of head trauma, his family said.

LA County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives and Hawthorne Police are looking for two people involved in the assault that killed Eddy Nwanyanwu, a 53-year-old cab driver who was attacked outside a check cashing store in Hawthorne on Monday.

The assault occurred at the 12800 block of Prairie Avenue around 4:34 p.m.

Nwanyanwu pulled up to the check cashing business and that’s when a woman started arguing with him, according to an NBC4 report.

Nwanyanwu went inside the check cashing store and when he walked out, a man walked up to him and assaulted him, police said.

"My grandma was eating at the restaurant right there, Casa Del Sol, and she said that she heard a lot of commotion and people fighting and then everyone ran and the cops came," a witness said.

Nwanyanwu was hit so hard, he died of head trauma, his family said.

Residents in the neighborhood describe the intersection of Prairie Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard as a "rough" part of the city.

A Hawthorne police officer told NBC4 that the strip mall where the assault occurred is the only one in Hawthorne where every single security camera is working, which may help track down the person who killed Nwanyanwu.
