Suspicious Package Prompts Evacuation at LAPD Headquarters

The discovery of a suspicious package at Los Angeles Police Department headquarters in downtown Los Angeles prompted the evacuation of the building for about two hours Thursday night.

An envelope containing a powdery substance was located about 7:30 p.m. in the mail room of the building, located at 100 W. First St., and the building was quickly cleared out, according to the LAPD.

A police HazMat unit was called to the scene and determined the substance was not harmful, police said.

The building was re-opened about 9:40 p.m.
