SWAT Standoff Ends With Arrest of Arson Suspect

A 47-year-old arson suspect arrested with the help of the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team is in custody after barricading himself inside a Los Feliz residence for more than nine hours, police said Friday.

The standoff near Franklin and Western avenues began just before 11:40 a.m. Thursday and ended with the man's arrest without incident around 8:45 p.m., said Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations section.

The suspect, Gregory Barrett, is believed to have set fires in Los Angeles and Long Beach, Los Angeles Fire Battalion Chief Ronnie Villanueva told the Los Angeles Times.

Arson investigators from the Los Angeles and Long Beach fire departments were at the location to serve a warrant when Barrett locked himself up inside the residence, The Times reported.

A SWAT team was called in for assistance some two hours into the standoff, Baek said. Details of the subsequent arrest were not immediately released.
