Swimmer Killed in Catalina Boat Crash ID'd

A woman killed when she was struck by a boat off Catalina Island was identified Friday.

Belinda Nguyen, 22, of Los Angeles, was swimming near Two Harbors Moorings just after noon Thursday when she was struck by a boat.

Nguyen was killed on impact, when the boat's propeller struck her in the head, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

She had been snorkeling in the mooring field in the Isthmus Cove, according to the sheriff's department.

Nguyen, who family members said grew up in Los Feliz, had been living on Catalina Island for some time.

Harbor Patrol responded and recovered Nguyen’s body from the water.

A cause for the collision was not immediately released, and an investigation into her death is underway, officials said.
