Places inside places isn't quite the meta thing it used to be, thanks to a bevy of pop-ups popping up inside existing businesses.
But before those limited-time experiences, experiences that tend to have a singular focus and a short run, arrived on the scene, there was The Varnish, a throwback tavern located inside Cole's, Originators of the French Dip Sandwich.
The stylish, sepia-toned bar was no here-today-gone-next-month guest star at the storied DTLA restaurant, however; it was designed to be a permanent part of the whole.
So permanent, in fact, that The Varnish is celebrating its first decade on Sunday night, Feb. 24.
And we do mean "celebrating," for formal attire is a must at the 10th anniversary soirée (and not a suggestion).

The night will boast "... guest bartenders, musical performance, sponsored cocktails, Champagne, and daiquiri toasts," as well as an atmosphere that rocks a lot of early 20th-century cred.
The beneficiary of the evening? Spirited Coalition for Change, which seeks to help our city's homeless population, will receive half of the proceeds. This is the give-back organization, by the by, that was co-founded by 213 Hospitality, which oversees The Varnish and Cole's.
And if you just can't miss the Academy Awards, take note: Cole's will be holding "Oscar festivities," lending the whole affair even more elegance and vavoom.
You'll definitely want to dig out the dressy togs for this one, a celebration of a place within a place, a hidden, cocktail-cool treasure that's more than proved its staying power over the last decade.
