Two Dead, Five Injured in Rollover Accident

Two people were killed and five injured in a rollover accident on the 60 freeway near Pyrite Road Monday.

Eight people were driving in a Mitsubishi Montero to Lake Perris for a family picnic.  Around 9:46 a.m. the driver lost control of the vehicle, possibly from a tire failure, and it rolled over, according to Officer Maurice Walker of the California Highway Patrol.

Two children,  a 14-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car, CHP said. Both died.

Five of the eight passengers were children. Riverside County firefighters along with Cal Fire had to cut through the vehicle to free the survivors trapped inside.

Three victims were reported to have critical injuries, two had minor to moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital , County Fire said.

Traffic was backed up for several miles as police investigated the cause of the accident.
