CHP say the wrong-way driver had been trying to escape from deputies by speeding down the freeway into on-coming traffic

Two men were killed in a head-on car crash as a driver fled deputies on the southbound 110 freeway in Downtown LA Thursday.

A grey compact car collided with a black pick-up truck as it drove into oncoming traffic west of 7th Street at around 1:19 a.m, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The wrong-way driver is said to have pulled over into the hard shoulder during the pursuit, before making a U-turn and trying to make his escape.

The wrong-way driver is described as being in his 20s, and the victim is thought to have been in his 40s. Coroners will be working to ascertain the men's identities.

Calls were received regarding a driver weaving in and out of traffic at around 1:19 a.m, and moments later deputies spotted the wreckage.

It is also being checked whether the driver had been wanted for criminal activity

There were no obvious signs that the suspect had been drinking, such as bottles or cans in his vehicle.

Only one lane remained open while the accident was cleaned up, and the 110 was fully reopened at 5:22 a.m.
