Vehicle Crash Shears Fire Hydrant, Causes Power Outage

The outage disabled traffic lights, resulting in a second traffic accident

First a vehicle crash, then a power outage, then another vehicle crash. It's been a rough morning in the Valley.

Nearly 3,800 customers in Panorama City were without power after a vehicle sheared a fire hydrant, sending a fountain of water into power lines, the Department of Water and Power.

The accident was reported about 10:40 p.m. Monday, said DWP spokeswoman Carol Tucker, adding that power was expected to be restored by about 4:30 a.m.

The outage disabled traffic lights, resulting in a traffic accident at Roscoe Boulevard and Woodman Avenue shortly before 1 a.m., an On Scene camera crew reported from the site.

Further south, smoke could be seen wafting from two manhole covers near Vanowen Street, On Scene reported. Tucker said she could not confirm whether the smoke had anything to do with the outages.
