CARPINTERIA, Calif. -- Warrior spirit lives on at Carpinteria High School.
After a year of contentious meetings over campus Native American imagery, the school board voted Tuesday night to keep most of the Indian themes.
The whole thing started when a student member of the Chumash tribe complained last year that the mascot perpetuates stereotypes and is offensive to Native Americans.
The board decided the glowering red Indian caricatures on athletic patches and a cartoonish Indian head profile on floor mats will have to go.
An advisory committee had also recommended removal of the sculpture of a Plains Indian chief in the parking lot as well as the canoe and arrowheads on the district's logo. But the board rejected those proposals.
